Industry standards in the academy give the most power of faculty hiring to a university's faculty. This distinguishes us from a high school. Of course Dr Watson, our School Principal, is aided and abetted by his loyal and highly paid Human Resources head. With no consultation of the faculty constituencies on campus, they changed the hiring policies taking the power of approval out of the hands of the deans and provost. And when did it come to pass and now become the norm that all questions for job candidates have to be approved by the Human Resources department? Watson has quite masterfully centralized all power of job-gifting in his office like any good political ward boss. HLC heard all this. I wonder what the "communication and compliance" report will whitewash about this unchanged situation? With a new UPI contract coming up is there really no language we can include to protect faculty rights and involvement in hiring faculty? How long will we let this abuse continue?Cordayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11407012136671501643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7187403837913738089.post-91070024501584432152014-03-22T15:10:56.767-05:002014-03-22T15:10:56.767-05:00And don't forget, he's actually done this....And don't forget, he's actually done this. I remember Juanita Sharpe telling me in 2011 or early 2012 that Watson refused to hire Biology's top candidate (or anyone for that matter), simply because of the person's race. Of course, several departments went through the search process last spring and summer only to be thwarted by the little dictator based on whatever arbitrary criteria he decided to apply to their searches, ultimately torpedoing their efforts and hiring no one. It still astounds me that someone in the position of a university president would make such idiotic statements. For years I have thought that the line from the old Pogo comic strip fits very well at CSU and particularly under the current regime--"some people are more equal than others..."Ann Kuzdalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00168556306929918973noreply@blogger.com
